Authsnap: Using AI in the Medical Field

What is Authsnap?

Authsnap is a team of medical professionals from varying backgrounds who know firsthand the devastating impact of a denied health insurance claim. Every time a claim is denied, a patient is left without care, and for many, that can mean the difference between life and death.

Authsnap’s mission is to help people overturn denied claims as efficiently and effectively as possible. By streamlining the appeals process, they’ve reduced the time it takes to review a claim from one to two hours down to just five to ten minutes. In urgent situations, time matters and it shouldn’t all be spent wrestling with insurance paperwork.

How does it work?

Each case is unique and requires its own finely tuned appeal letter. Authsnap uses machine learning to create custom letters based on an individual’s specific needs.

So, what exactly is machine learning? It’s a method of training AI models to improve and adapt over time without the need for constant user input.

For Authsnap, that means a powerful system capable of generating appeal letters quickly with a high probability of success. After the initial letter has been drafted, it’s reviewed by a team of claim specialists to ensure correctness and quality before being sent to the insurance company.

“If it was easy, everyone would do it…” – Gretchen Heinen, RN, PHN, BSN

Like any entrepreneurial venture, building Authsnap hasn’t been without challenges. According to co-founder Gretchen Heinen, RN, PHN, BSN, the first step is having the right team, one with determination and commitment to success in their field. For any startup, the first challenge will be finding that very first customer. What separates those who simply dream of entrepreneurship from those who make it happen is the willingness to run pilots, conduct case studies, and partner with businesses willing to take a chance on you.

Building the right team and securing your first customer are only part of the journey, there’s also the work of addressing technical and operational challenges. As Dr. Wael Khouli, MD, MBA points out, the “boring” parts of starting a business are just as critical. Legal compliance, logistics, and focusing on how to sell your product are all crucial to entrepreneurship. These aren’t always skills that new entrepreneurs have in their back pocket, which is why seeking guidance is so important. As Dr. Khouli says, it’s never a bad idea to ask for advice or help.
